Three years ago, spotting a phishing email was relatively easy: spelling mistakes, suspicious domains, generic greetings. In 2026, attackers use language models to generate emails that mimic the corporate tone, the business context, and even the writing style of real executives.

How modern phishing works

A sophisticated attack today unfolds in several phases. First, the attacker gathers public information from LinkedIn, the corporate website, and social media. Then an AI model generates an email that appears to come from the CFO, requesting an urgent transfer related to a real project. The sender's domain is almost identical to the real one, and there is always an element of urgency that inhibits critical thinking.

Why traditional filters are not enough

Spam filters based on keywords or IP reputation do not detect these attacks, because the email contains none of the typical spam words, it may come from a compromised legitimate domain, and the content is contextually accurate for the organization.

Microsoft Defender for Office 365: the technical answer

AI-powered anti-phishing

It analyzes the sender's behavior patterns, not just the content. If a domain that has never emailed your organization suddenly sends an urgent message to your CFO, Defender flags it even if the content looks legitimate.

Impersonation Protection

It specifically protects against impersonation of high-value internal users (CEO, CFO, CISO) and key vendor domains.

Attack Simulator

It lets you send simulated phishing campaigns to your own users to measure how vulnerable they are and train those who take the bait.

Safe Links and Safe Attachments

Every link in emails and documents is checked in real time. Attachments are detonated in a sandbox before they reach the user.

Organizational controls that complement the technology

  • Out-of-band verification: any transfer request must be verified by phone, never by email alone
  • Urgency policy: urgent requests received by email always require additional confirmation
  • Continuous training: regular simulations, not a once-a-year course
  • Principle of least privilege: users who do not need access to financial systems should not have it
