Many IT teams discover Azure cost overruns when it is already too late: the bill has arrived and the damage is done. The good news is that Azure offers native tools to detect anomalies before they escalate — as long as you know where to look.

Why do Azure costs spike?

Unexpected increases in the cloud bill are rarely accidental. The most common causes we find among our clients are:

  • Orphaned resources: stopped virtual machines that keep incurring costs for disks and public IPs
  • Misconfigured autoscaling: autoscaling rules that spin up instances with no upper limit
  • Storage without a lifecycle policy: blobs that grow indefinitely with no archiving or deletion
  • Unassigned licenses: M365 or Defender subscriptions that are paid for but not used
  • Development environments running 24/7: test environments that should be shut down outside business hours

Azure Cost Management: your first ally

Azure Cost Management + Billing is free and available in every tenant. Set up alerts at 80% and 100% of the monthly budget per subscription or resource group. When projected spend exceeds the threshold, you will receive an email before the month ends.

Cost analysis by tag

Implement a mandatory tagging policy (Project, Department, Environment) using Azure Policy. This lets you see exactly which business area generates every peso of cloud spend.

Advisor recommendations

Azure Advisor analyzes your environment and generates automatic recommendations: oversized VMs, reserved instances worth purchasing, and resources that have gone unused over the last 30 days.

Scheduled shutdown strategy

For development and test environments, automatic shutdown outside business hours can cut compute costs by up to 65%. Implement this with Azure Automation or directly from each VM's settings.

Reserved instances vs. pay-as-you-go

If you have predictable workloads that run more than 8 hours a day, 1- or 3-year reserved instances can deliver savings of up to 72% compared with pay-as-you-go pricing.

Where to start?

If your company has no visibility into cloud costs today, the first step is a Cost Assessment: we review your subscription, identify the highest-spend resources, and deliver an optimization plan with estimated savings. In most cases, we find between 20% and 40% of recoverable spend without affecting operations.
